Located in the heart of South Hadley, Massachusetts, you will see a beautiful mail building built along the Stony Brook River on the campus of Mount Holyoke College. Founded in 1837, Mount Holyoke wished to preserve their historic look at the inception of this project. Mount Holyoke placed great importance on the copper and slate going into it, which Supreme developed a gameplan for, matching their campus identity.

With all the possible on-campus students moving around the jobsite area, our team waited to begin work on this project until June of 2019, as soon as the students were released for the summer break. This strategic effort ensured the highest level of safety throughout the life of this roof replacement project, protecting the students as well as our Supreme team. Supreme Roofing utilized a scaffolding setup to access this multi-layered roof in terms of elevation, starting repairs in sequence from the highest to lowest roof levels.

On the pre-existing roof system, you had slate starting to shale and deteriorate due to old age on an over 100-year-old building. When removing the old roof system, Supreme performed a complete tear-off.

With going back with the new roof replacement, our Supreme team installed original slate again, which will last them a very long time. New brass snow guards were also installed on all four sides of the slanted roof areas, to protect pedestrian traffic from snowfall during the winter months. Supreme also installed brand new copper gutters, hips and valleys.

On the flat roof areas, we had a complete roof replacement as well, with a complete tear-off down to the deck. With the new system, our Supreme team installed a Firestone .060 reinforced EDPM system that came with a 20-year manufacturer warranty. On the perimeter areas, Supreme installed safety rails for the university’s HVAC staff, which guaranteed that fall protection would not be required to repair the mechanical equipment on the roof.

When working on this area of the roofing project, we took precautions in protecting a boiler room below the roof, which remained operational throughout the life of the roofing process. Our team installed an interior protection system to protect that area from any falling debris. Coordinating this sequence of the operation required an all-hands-on deck, 24-hour operation, from tear-off to install.

It was exciting for our team to play a role in preserving the historic look of this great college with the installation of this great roofing system on all the different levels of the building.
